On Monday, the Forest Department finally got possession of the 812 acres of land near Sanjay Gandhi National Park from the Aarey Dairy Colony.
This move has facilitated the Aarey Forest to be expanded in the heart of the Dream City.
It took 9 Months for the State Forest Department to take possession of the land after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that some of the land of the Aarey forest would be termed as Reserve.
Borivali’s Tehsildar and Town Survey Officer, Malad were both present at the possession.
The decision was taken at a meeting in September last year in the presence of Dairy Development Minister Sunil Kedar and Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray. It was the day when Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that the government would allocate 600-acres of land in the Aarey Milk Colony as a reserve forest.
The land is now unavailable for development under the Indian Forest Act of 1927. Section 4 of India Forest Act means the govt intends to declare the land as reserve forest by appointing a forest settlement officer. The officer will inquire into and determine the existence, nature and extent of any rights of any person on the said land. The officer will then be open for suggestions and objections from the people for the next 45 days and then, the notification in the official gazette will be issued.
