On Saturday, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has said that people coming back from the Kumbh Mela taking place in Haridwar, will have to be quarantined to stop the spread of Coronavirus in the city. Currently, Kumbh Mela is taking place where lakhs of devotees are attending the religious gathering in Haridwar to take a dip in the holy river Ganga. This event has raised concerns for the further spread of Covid. Experts have raised concerns about the spread of more contagious variants of the disease during such events.

“Those returning from Kumbh Mela to their respective states will distribute Corona as ‘prasad’,” the BMC Mayor was quoted.

“I don’t know who has gone and who is coming back from the Kumbh Mela. But just like the event of our Muslim brothers in Delhi last year and 27 people added to the cases, those who are returning will spread the disease like prasad in every state and the situation will become worse,” she was heard saying in a video tweeted by news agency ANI.

Pednekar has said that 95% of Mumbaikars are following the Covid-19 guidelines while the remaining 5% who are not following the curbs which is causing problems to others.

She further added, “I think a complete lockdown should be imposed looking at the current Covid-19 situation.”

Haridwar Chief Medical Officer Dr SK Jha said, “30 Sadhus have tested positive for Covid-19 so far, in Haridwar. Medical teams are going to akhadas and RT-PCR tests of sadhus are being done continuously. The process will be further quickened from April 17.”Dr Jha also informed that the coronavirus patients who are in serious condition are being referred to AIIMS Rishikesh. However, he also clarified that there is no panic-like situation in Hospitals in Haridwar.
