The Incident:
On Saturday, a CCTV footage of a Man stabbing a 26 year-old woman went viral on the internet. The incident took place at a market in Delhi. The man stabbed the woman over 25 times and she took her last breath on the roads of the marketplace. It was recognized by the police that they were husband and wife.Harish repeatedly stabbed his wife, Nilu, in public in north west Delhi’s Budh Vihar.
The Video:
A mid aged guy with a pink shirt was seen walking with the woman when all of a sudden, he took out a knife are started stabbing her in the broad daylight. People nearby saw the incident taking place but did not take any efforts to save the woman. 4-5 people are seen coming out of two nearby shops. A biker also stops while two men are seen standing behind the attacker. But the man continued stabbing the Woman. The woman dies on the spot but due to rage, the man keeps on stabbing the woman over and over again. “Don’t dare to come forward,” the man can be heard screaming out as a few passersby tried to intervene to save the woman.
The Rumour:
After the video went viral, rumours of the man killing his wife over suspicion of her having an illicit affair spread.
The Truth:
During the interrogation, the DCP investigating the case said, Mehta disclosed that he did not like his wife working and wanted her to quit the job and stay at home.
The Investigation:
The police said that around 2pm, the Vijay Vihar station was called and informed about the stabbing and then, two beat constables were sent to the crime scene.
The police chased the suspect who was running holding the knife. The police caught the suspect with the knife that was stained in blood. The injured woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared “brought dead”, the police said.
The police identified the victim as 26-year-old Neelu Mehta who worked at the Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. It was her husband, Harish Mehta, 40, that stabbed her to death who is an employee of the Marriage Bureau. Both Harish and Neelu hail from Rajkot in Gujarat.
The Legal Aspects:
A case of Murder has been registered in this regard against Harish under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further investigation into the matter is underway.
