Twitter is flooded with the “Boycott China” hashtag after the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) awarded a contract to a Chinese company, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company Limited, for the construction of a 5.6-kilometre underground stretch, from New Ashok Nagar to Sahibabad, of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project.

The project is worth Rs 1,126 crore and it has been given to the Chinese company. “Approvals have to be taken at various levels for bids that are funded by multilateral agencies. This bid was also awarded following the set procedure and guidelines. Now, all the civil work tenders of the 82-km-long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor have been awarded and the construction is going on in full swing to commission the project in time,” an NCRTC spokesperson said.

The contract was awarded to the company according to the set procedure and guidelines said NRCTC, which is executing the country’s first Regional Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS).

Social Media is in rage as recently, the country banned Chinese applications as a step forward to become ‘Aatmanirbhar’ and reduce trade with China. But this contract comes as a contradictory decision to the previous actions taken by the government against China. India and China have been on a long standoff because of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.

Twitter is full of anti government memes that mention hatred towards the decision of the project being given to the Chinese company. “This is extremely bad example to the national sentiments of anti-china movement. Government gives rail contract to Chinese company This is not acceptable,” read one of the Tweets.
