When Stephen Fry said, “The Winner of… the Global Teacher Award 2020 is RANJITSINH DISALE from India,” the Solapur resident Ranjitsinh Disale (32), jumped off his seat out of joy. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari congratulated Disale on being the first Indian to win the Global Teacher Prize.

Ranjitsinh Disale, won the award for his efforts towards Girls’ Education and also for his immense hard work in the field of Education through QR Coded Books. Mr. Disale said, “In the Hard Times, Teachers are giving their best to make sure every student has access to their birthright of a good education,” Ranjitsinh said while talking about Education being a Birthright of all.

What the Global Teacher Prize?

The Global Teacher Prize is an annual US $1 million award by the Varkey Foundation to a teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. Nominations of teachers who meet specific criteria are open to the worldwide public, and teachers can also nominate themselves. The judging is done by the Global Teacher Prize Academy, consisting of head teachers, education experts, commentators, journalists, public officials, tech entrepreneurs, company directors, and scientists from around the world.

Governor Koshyari wrote,
“I convey my heartiest greetings and felicitations to Shri Ranjitsinh Disale, teacher from Zilla Parishad school in Paritewadi, Solapur district on being chosen for the coveted $ 1 million Global Teacher Prize 2020, which is awarded by the London-based Varkey Foundation. Shri Disale’s work of generating interest about education among children from rural areas, through innovative ideas and use of technology are commendable and worthy of emulating by others.”

After he was announced as the $1 Million prize, Disale said that he would share half the prize money among the other shortlisted teachers in the top 10. Reasoning his sharing, Disale said, “Teachers always believe in Giving and Sharing,” and hence he said, he was to share 50% of the prize money amongst others. Mr Disale’s decision to split the prize will mean over £40,000 each for runners-up from countries including Italy, Brazil, Vietnam, Malaysia, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea, the US and also Jamie Frost from the UK.

“By sharing the prize money, you teach the world the importance of giving,”
said Indian education philanthropist Sunny Varkey, the founder of the prize.
