On Friday, School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said that all the private schools have been asked by the government to install CCTV cameras in the premises before the next academic year begins.
So far, in Mumbai, CCTV cameras have been installed in 81% of schools. 71% of the 8,486 schools across Mumbai already have cameras installed in their premises.
Gaikwad said “The Pune school where the incident took place had installed cameras but they did not have hard disks. Only installing cameras is not enough, schools have to ensure that they are operational.”
She added that out of 65,000 government schools in Maharashtra, only 1624 schools have CCTV cameras installed. “We will cover the remaining schools in a phase wise manner in the next one year,” Gaikwad added.
