68,000 Covid-19 cases recorded on Monday in India; Highest one-day spike since October

On Monday, India saw more than 68,000 fresh COVID-19 cases that were reported in those 24 hours, making it the biggest one-day spike since last year October, the Union Health Ministry data showed.

The highest Covid-19 cases were registered from the states that included Maharashtra, Karnataka and Punjab. The three states accounted for 84.5 per cent of the 68,020 fresh cases recorded in the country in a day.

Going statewise, Maharashtra ranks first in contributing the most amount of cases of Coronavirus in India. The state had officialy WARNED of another lockdown and its first step, a Night Curfew already begun in the state from Saturday midnight. Maharashtra reported an overwhelming majority — 40,414 cases — of the total, along with 108 deaths. The state is already preparing for a shortfall in health care infrastructure. To the contrary, Maharashtra has also reported the maximum number of single-day recoveries with 17,874 newly recovered cases.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in the country now stands at 1.2 crore with 1,61,843 deaths recorded till now since the outbreak hit India in January 2020.

Five states — Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh — cumulatively account for 80.17 per cent of the total active cases in the country, it added.

According to the ministry, 17 states and Union territories have lower cases per million than the national average (8,724) whereas 19 states and UTs have higher cases per million than the national average.

Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Haryana and Rajasthan are the ten states that are showing an upward graph in the daily new cases, the ministry said.

The ministry also told that the total vaccination coverage in India has crossed 6 crore and more than 6.05 crore (6,05,30,435) vaccine doses have been administered through 9,92,483 sessions, according to the provisional report till 7 am (as of Monday).

India’s total recoveries stand at 1,13,55,993 with 32,231 recoveries being registered on the day. Besides, 291 deaths were reported in a day in India.
