25 mega cities account for more than 52% of World’s Urban Greenhouse Gas. Cities in Europe, Australia and the United States and other 167 countries are responsible for an increase of more than 50% in greenhouse emissions.
Mostly, the developing countries with their per capita income matched those of the developed countries are the biggest contributors for the climate crisis.
“Nowadays, more than 50 per cent of the global population resides in cities. Cities are reported to be responsible for more than 70 per cent of GHG emissions, and they share a big responsibility for the decarbonisation of the global economy,” said Shaoqing Chen from Sun Yat-sen University, China, in a paper published in the journal Frontiers in Sustainable Cities.
Researchers warned that to control global warming in this century, cities need to ” transform from a resource-dependent industrialization path to an innovation-driven sustainable development path.”
