In many Central Universities, PhD used be a mandatory requirement to teach. Recently, UGC has now decided to keep behind the old mandatory requirement of PhD so as to bring in more industry experts to teach in Universities.
Reportedly, the University Grants Commission is also planning to introduce special positions which will likely be for Professors of Practice and Associate Professor of Practice.
The motive of this idea and creating new positions is to bring in people with more hands-on experience and industry work to share their knowledge with the students.
Moreover, if this plan goes well, then UGC will likely make sure that they will be checking the industry experience while recruiting ‘experts’ or ‘professors’ to teach. Also, the requirement of PhD degree would not be considered for any of the special positions.
