With Covid-19 declared as a pandemic since one and half year in India, another problem that has erupted since a month is the after effect of Coronavirus that is Mucormycosis (Black Fungus).
The cases of Black Fungus have been increasing in patients who have recovered from Covid and even simultaneously with Covid. Due to this, the state of Rajasthan has declared Black Fungus as an EPIDEMIC in the state.
Mucormycosis has been notified as an epidemic and a notifiable disease in the state under the Rajasthan Epidemic Act 2020, according to a notification issued by the state’s principal health secretary Akhil Arora.
The fungus is primarily affecting people recovering from COVID-19 and currently, the state has around 100 black fungus patients leading it to be declared as an epidemic.
A separate ward has been made at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur for the treatment of Mucormycosis patients.
The Health Minister of the state Raghu Sharma said that the state had placed orders of 2,500 vials of a drug used to treat the black fungus patients. Adding in, he said that this was to ensure equal and coordinated treatment of mucormycosis as well as Covid-19.
Experts say that diabetic individuals are more prone to getting the Black Fungus infection and recently, AIIMS Neurology head MV Padma Srivastava said that the mucormycosis cases have crossed the three-figure mark at their hospital, as ANI reported.
