After giving hope to Maharashtra’s people of not imposing any Curfew on Sunday, Uddhav Thackeray changed his stance the very next day when he announced that the state will go under a ‘Night Curfew’ from Tuesday.

The curfew will be effective in all municipal corporation areas across the state of Maharashtra from 22nd December to 5th January between 11 PM to 6 AM. Iqbal Singh Chahal, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner stated that the Night Curfew doesn’t mean that people couldn’t step out at all.

“There is a difference between a night curfew and a lockdown. While in a lockdown, individuals cannot step out of their homes. In a curfew, more than 5 people cannot assemble outside during the specified hours. So, offices that function overnight or something like dairy transportation can still operate. Taxis, cars and auto rickshaws will also run just like before,”
he said.

Along with a Night Curfew, it was also announced that passengers coming from European and Middle East countries in the State will have to compulsorily go under institutional quarantine for 14 days, starting from today. The passengers travelling will also have to go through a COVID-19 RT-PCR test on the fifth or seventh day of their arrival in Maharashtra.

Uddhav Thackeray chaired a meeting on Monday to review the Covid-19 situation in the state and hence the implementation of the curfew as a preventive measure to curb the spread of the virus.
