India has become successful in increasing its Leopard Population in the last 6 years by 60%. Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday announced that a “60 per cent increase has been recorded in the population count of leopards in India from 2014 estimates’’.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, on Monday said that the population of Leopards in 2014 was estimated 7,910 in the 2018 study. After 6 years, now in 2020, the population is about 12,852.

The increase in the number of Tigers, Lions and now Leopards is nothing but a testimony to the conservation efforts and of the fledgling wildlife and biodiversity of the country. “Increase in the population of tigers, Asiatic lions and now leopards show how India is protecting its environment, ecology and biodiversity,” Javadekar added.

An official release mentioned the states with the highest number of the Wild Cat species. “The States of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra recorded the highest leopard estimates at 3,421; 1,783 and 1,690 respectively.”

Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of leopards in the state followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Congratulating the states, The Union Minister tweeted,
“Congratulations to the States of Madhya Pradesh (3,421), Karnataka (1783) and Maharashtra (1690) who have recorded the highest leopard estimates. Increase in tiger, lion and leopards population over the last few years is a testimony to fledgling wildlife and biodiversity.”

After the news was announced, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, applauded the efforts that the government had put towards animal conservation. “Great news! After lions and tigers, the leopard population increases. Congratulations to all those who are working towards animal conservation. We have to keep up these efforts and ensure our animals live in safe habitats,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
