Washington : India secured a victory in the highly contested to the United Nations’ Commission on Status of Women Economic (UNCSW), a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This victory makes India a member of United Nations’ Commission on Status of Women for four years i.e. from 2021 to 2025.
The Beijing World Conference on Women (1995) celebrates its 25th anniversary this year which makes India’s win even more significant. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) which is the principal global body focused on gender equality and women empowerment.
India secured 38 of the 54 ballots, while Afghanistan secured 39 ballots. China
secured the least number of ballets with their count of 27 failing to cross the halfway mark.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador T S Tirumurti tweeted this announcement – “India wins seat in prestigious ECOSOC body! India elected member of Commission on Status of Women (CSW). It’s a ringing endorsement of our commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all our endeavours. We thank member states for their support.”

China lost the election despite being a permanent member of the UN and according to the Print, this may be a reflection on China’s own record of women equality and empowerment.
This win comes on the eve of India gearing up to sit at the UN Security Council High table as a non-permanent member for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2021 making it even more significant.
