The central government has decided to give free health insurance of ₹5 lakh to children upto the age of 18 years, who were orphaned due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic. This was announced by Union minister Anurag Thakur.

Ayushman Bharat, the government’s flagship scheme, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2018 with its twin pillars of Health & Wellness Centers (HWCs) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) with bidirectional linkages between the two for providing the full range of services across the continuum of care. The PM-CARES for children scheme was launched by PM Modi on May 29, 2021. It aims to support children who have lost both the parents or legal guardian or adoptive parents or surviving parent to the Covid-19 pandemic during the period starting from March 11, 2021
