All higher educational institutions have been asked by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to award degrees to the students within a span of 180 days after the declaration of results.

The University Grants Commission (UGC), in a letter to the University vice-chancellors as well as the college principals, stated that action will be taken against those universities who fail to award degrees as asked by the UGC.

As per the official notice, “The degree award date/s shall be within 180 days of the date/s by which the students are expected to qualify and become eligible for them.”

The decision was made by the commission after it received a huge number of complaints/grievances/RTIs/questions in relation to the delay of awarding degrees to the enrolled students in several programmes that the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) offer.

The UGC letter also said “Needless to say, receiving a degree in a timely manner after successfully completing a programme is an inalienable right of a student.”

It has also been requested by the UGC to the higher education institutions that they go according to the UGC regulations and also award the degrees to those students who are eligible within the specified time frame and provide them with a provisional degree along with transcripts of the final year.
