The University Grants Commission (UGC) published a guidance document on Tuesday which delivers a framework on good research practices across institutions in India.
The document provides guidelines for current researchers on how to check for problem points in their research paper and the potential threats such as plagiarism, falsification, fabrication and misinterpretation of data. Along with that, the document also has helpful information about various steps involved in conducting a research, namely — design, planning, execution, documentation and storage of data.
This guidance document further aids researchers in selecting the right journal for publication of their research papers and for mentoring upcoming research enthusiasts.
Titled ‘Guidance document – Good academic research practices’, the document also envisions setting up an Office of Research Integrity (ORI) at each institution to ensure that the best practices are followed.
“Each institution is different and may use this framework as it best applies to its own context,” the document said. Research publications across the world have grown at a compounded annual growth rate of approximately three per cent over the past two centuries.
Under its Vice Chairman Bhushan Patwardhan and other academicians, the UGC has been trying to work on improving the research standards in Indian universities and the latest document is an effort in that direction.
The UGC has also shared a list of documents for reference for further insights into good academic research practices and research integrity.
