A special drive was initiated by the Thane traffic department, the officials took action against 1,708 motorists and recovered pending e-challan of Rs 6 lakh on first day of the drive.
“We collected a fine of Rs 6 lakh against 1,708 unpaid e-challans till Tuesday evening. On an average, we collected a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh on a daily basis. However, on Tuesday we had collected fine of Rs 6 lakh. Those who were unable to pay the pending e-challans, their licence was confiscated. Nearly 42 driving licences were seized, five RC books were confiscated and nine vehicles were impounded. They will be returned once the pending e-challans are cleared,” said Balasaheb Patil, deputy commissioner police, traffic.
Patil stated that, we hope this drive will force people to clear their pending e-challans and not keep them pending and pilling up for long.
The traffic authorities had done naka bandi at various junctions in the 18 units of Thane police commissionerate, including areas of Bhiwandi, Thane, Dombivli and Kalyan.
The vehicles were being stopped randomly at various locations and checked for any pending e-challans, if any, the motorists were asked to clear the pending fines.
By Tuesday, the department collected fines worth Rs 6 lakh from 1,708 unpaid e-challans. Balasaheb Patil, the deputy commissioner of police, traffic, said that one an average, the department collects fine worth Rs 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh every day. The officials also cancelled the licenses of the offenders who were unable to clear their dues.
Patil said, “Nearly 42 driving licences were seized, five RC books were confiscated and nine vehicles were impounded. They will be returned once the pending e-challans are cleared. Patil said that he hopes that the drive will urge locals to clear their pending e-challans. The drive is said to continue to a few more weeks along with surprise checks by the staff of the department across Thane.
