On Monday, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways and the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, said that Tesla, the US Clear Energy and Electric Vehicle Company will ‘Begin Operations’ in India in the early months of 2021. The Union Minister told this during the Indian Express Ideas Exchange Program.
Gadkari, during the address, highlighted the encouragement for electrical cars in the country and also mentioned that a lot Indian companies are also working on Electrical vehicles that may turn out to be more affordable for the Indian buyers and at the same time, technically as advance as Tesla.
Adding in, the Union Minister said that Tesla will start operations first with sales and then maybe look at assembly and manufacturing based on the response to the cars. “India is going to become a number 1 manufacturing hub for auto in five years,” Gadkari added.
The first car by Tesla is to be launched by the end of the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2021-2022. The pre-bookings for the same are said to begin by January 2021.
Earlier this year, Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk, on Twitter, replied to a post that had a photograph mentioning: “India Wants Tesla.” Musk hinted at the company entering India in 2021 saying, “Next Year for Sure!”
Tesla’s Model 3 is likely to be the first launch in the country. The bookings for the car will begin in a few weeks. The completely built units will be imported and likely to be priced Rs 55 lakh onwards.

- The former has an electric range of around 568km.
