On Saturday, the Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana declared the vacation period for the Supreme Court. The Summer Vacation for the SC will begin on May 10 and the doors of the Supreme Court will be reopened on June 28th.
In the view of the increasing Covid-19 cases in the country, the Summer Vacation was pre-poned. Earlier, the date was announced as May 14 and now, it is May 10. The court was to reopen on 30th June but, now as the vacation is advanced, the reopening is also advanced to 28th June.
The suggestions of the bar body were taken into consideration in a meeting and only then, the CJI NV Ramana rescheduled the apex court’s summer vacation.
On Saturday, a circular announcing the same was issued by the Additional Registrar Mahesh T Patankar.
The circular mentioned that November 13 will be a working day for the top court.
A circular issued by the Court on Saturday said :
“It is hereby circulated for information of all concerned that upon consideration of the suggestions from the Bar due to an alarming surge in Covid-19 infections, and in terms of provisions of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013 in that regard, Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India has been pleased to direct that the Summer Vacation of the Supreme Court Calendar, 2021 be rescheduled to commence on Monday, the 10th May, 2021, and the Hon’ble Court shall reopen after Summer Vacation on Monday, the 28 June, 2021, and further that Saturday, the 13th November, 2021 shall be a working day of the Hon’ble Court”.
A meeting with the representatives of the Bar Council of India,Supreme Court Bar Association and Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association was held last week which was headed by CJI NV Ramana. The meeting discussed the proposal of advancing the Summer break.
For seeking advancement of the Summer break due to the spiked coronavirus cases and the overall situation of the country, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), led by its president and senior advocate Vikas Singh, and the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association (SCAORA) had met the CJI.
The full bench agreed to the proposal, as per the PTI report and hence, the decision.
