For the collection of toll revenue, the government is preparing to bring in new technology. As per the new system, the amount of toll to be paid will depend on the distance travelled by car. This means that a person will have to pay toll based on the distance they travel through car on highway or expressway. The test of a pilot project for this system is being conducted.
Earlier, this year, while he spoke in the Lok Sabha it was stated by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways that toll plaza booths will be eliminated by the government throughout the nation in a period of a year. Moreover, he also stated that a GPS-based toll collection system will replace the toll booths.
At present, a person has to pay the toll for the entire distance from one toll plaza to the other, even though the vehicle is not completing its distance from one toll booth to the other.
