On Sunday, retired SC Judge Justice Rohintan Nariman has asked the Supreme Court to repeal the laws of sedition and also the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He said that it will allow citizens to “Breathe more freely”.

The retired SC Judge was speaking at an event to commemorate the 109th birth anniversary of Late Vishwanath Pasayat.

While speaking at the function organised by Viswanath Pasayat Memorial Committee, he said that, “I would exhort the Supreme Court to not send sedition law cases pending before it back to the Centre. Governments will come and go (but) it is important for the court to use its power and strike down Section 124A and offensive portion of UAPA. Then citizens here would breathe more freely.”

In 2015, retired judge Nariman had quashed Section 66A of the Information Technology Act in 2015 for having the “chilling effect” on the right to freedom of speech. Along with this, he also called the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act a “draconian legislation” that requires to be scrutinised by the SC.
