The authorities started penalized such owners of high-end vehicles whose e-challans were pending.
The officials from the Thane traffic department collected a fine of Rs 31,000 from four motorists driving SUV and sedan cars against their unpaid pending e-challans.
“Our first focus is to get the dues cleared by people who are able to pay the fines, but don’t, while the rest of the people are given time till the end of the month to pay the pending fines,” said Balasaheb Patil, deputy commissioner of police, traffic. The authorities stated that there are many offenders who have not paid the e-challans issued against them. In an attempt for them to clear their dues a special drive will be started from next month. December 1 onwards, the traffic officers will do naka bandi and randomly check e-challans against vehicles.
“Motorists with fine amount more than Rs 5,000 will have their vehicles confiscated. The vehicles will only be returned once the fine is cleared,” said Patil. Around 2,500 e-challans are issued daily.
