On Wednesday morning dozen of Raigad police officials arrived at Arnab Goswami’s residence in Worli to arrest him on charges of abetment to suicide of a 53- years old interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother in 2018.

Besides Goswami, two others were also arrested identified as Feroz Shaikh and Nitesh Sarda were also involved in 2018 case.

According to report, Goswami claimed that he has been physically assaulted by police officials.

Reacting to this Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut told media that the Maharashtra police is allowed to take action against anyone given there is substantial evidence. “The law is followed in Maharashtra. Police can take action if they have evidence against anyone. Since the formation of Thackeray government, no action has been taken against anyone for revenge”, Raut said.

As per FIR Goswami had not paid his dues amounting to Rs 83 lakhs to Anvay Naik, Who was forced to take the extreme step as he was not paid his dues collectively pitched atRs 5.40 crore.

While the case was already closed. In May 2020 Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukhordered a re-investigation into it after a fresh complaint was filed by Adnya Naik, daughter of the late interior designer

Deshmukh had tweeted “Adnya Naik had complained to me that #Alibaugpolice had not investigated nor payment of dues from #ArnabGoswami’s @Republic which drove her entrepreneur father &grandmother to suicide in May 2018. I have ordered CID re-investigation of the case”.

As soon as the news of Goswami’s arrest broke, people took social media to react to it.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar condemned the incident.

“We condemn the attack on press freedom in #Maharashtra. This is not the way to treat the Press. This reminds us of the emergency days when the press was treated like this.” Prakash Javadekar tweeted.

BJP leader TejasviSurya announced a protest by BJYM near Mantralayin Mumbai against Goswami’s arrest.

“BJYM condemns #ArnabGoswami’s arrest & this attack on freedom of press Request every young Mumbaikar who value our constitutional freedoms to join BJYM protest against this fascist action @ 𝟏.𝟑𝟎𝐏𝐌, 𝐃𝐫𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐞, near 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲, 𝐌𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐢.” Tejasvi Surya tweeted.

The Editor’s Guild of India also issued a statement condemning the incident asking the Maharashtra goverment to treat Goswami fairly.
