  • BJP MLA Surendra Singh when questioned on the increasing rapes in UP commented  saying they can only be prevented by teaching ‘sanskaar’ to daughters.
  • Surendra Singh is a BJP MLA from the Bairia constituency in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia.
  • These remarks come at a time when the UP government is being criticised over its handling of the Hathras gang rape and murder case.

In a video released by the Asian news agency ANI, BJP MLA Surendra Singh from the Bairia constituency in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia responded to a reporter’s question on the reason for such incidents in the state by saying parents must inculcate good values in their “young daughters” to prevent such crimes.

In a controversial remark, the Legislator on Saturday said that rape cases in the country can be prevented only with “sanskaar” (culture and values) and “shasan” (governance) or “talwar” (sword) are powerless. This remark comes amid nationwide outrage over the alleged gangrape and death of a woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras village which has prompted the UP government to order a CBI probe.

The MLA further stated, “I am also a teacher besides a legislator. Such incidents can only be stopped with the help of good values and not governance and violence. Parents should ensure to instill good values in their young daughters.”

“It is the government’s responsibility to prevent rapes but it is also the family’s  responsibility. The government and the values will together make the country beautiful and prevent such cases.”, he further added.

His remarks have received massive flak on Twitter and Kriti Sanon as well as other Bollywood celebs have slammed him for his misogynistic comments.

The UP state government is also being widely criticised over the handling of the case with opposition party leaders demanding the chief minister’s resignation. On Saturday, the government recommended a CBI probe in order to investigate the chain of events from the alleged gang rape to the suspicious cremation.

Besides this, the government has also suspended three police officers, including Hathras Superintendent of Police Vikrant Vir, till now.
