Most of the patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area. Till now 27,58,630 people have been tested in the district.
The 4,99,784 patients include 2,51,223 from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area; 1,30,572 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC); 8252 from Cantonment areas; 85,061 are from Rural areas, and 24,676 from municipal council (Nagar Parishad) areas in the district, according to the District’s Health Officer.
It is not just this year but, even in the year 2020 when the Covid-19 virus was new in the country, it was the Pune District that had been detecting very high numbers. It had reported close to 6,000 cases on September 10, that remained the record for any city before Delhi surpassed it in November.
As one of the biggest cities in the country, Pune has all the right conditions that favour the spread of an epidemic like this. What is surprising, however, is that its situation is worse than many other larger urban agglomerations where conditions are even more suitable.
The bigger concern, currently is the Active Cases in Pune which is the highest in the country. Also, more than 80 per cent of the allocated beds in the Pune Municipal Corporation areas are already occupied. The ICUs and oxygen-support beds available are very few which can be a difficult task for the city government to tackle.
