said Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, PTI reported.
Sonowal also told PTI that a lot of government lands were intruded by suspected illegal immigrants and his government initiated to evict them and provide the land to the indigenous people — most of them are tribals, OBCs and ex-tea garden labourers.
Tomorrow morning I would be among the people of Assam. At a programme in Sivasagar, 1.06 lakh land pattas/allotment certificates will be distributed. We are committed to doing everything possible to preserve the rights and unique culture of the great state of Assam.

23rd January, will be the first time since independence that such a big number of people will be given ‘patta’ in Assam in one go. The event will be held at Jerenga Pothar in Sivasagar district, a historical place connected with Assam’s erstwhile Ahom kingdom.
The great Sati Jaymati showed her valor and patriotism at the Jerenga Pothar. Due to the historic importance, the government’s decision of handing over of land pattas to the local indigenous families is assumed of great importance too.
