Pakistan to receive ‘Made in India’ Vaccines under GAVI; a step towards immunizing poor countries

Made in India vaccines are soon going to be supplied to the rival-neighboring country Pakistan. Under the United Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization or GAVI which is a public-private global health partnership, the vaccines are to be given to Pakistan in order to increase access to immunisation in poor countries.

India’s Covid-19 vaccine-COVISHIELD made by Pune’s Serum Institute of India run by Adar Poonawala are the vaccines that are allotted to Pakistan. 14.64 million doses of Covishield- developed by Pune-based Serum Institute of India – have been fixed for the country between February and May. Adar Poonawalla’s Serum Institute is the world’s largest vaccine maker.

This year in January, Pakistan’s drug regulator, Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan, had permitted Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use which was the first Covid-19 vaccine to be granted approval.

“Pakistan is one of the 92 lower-income economies eligible for support under the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (Gavi COVAX AMC),” GAVI spokesperson told NDTV.  Pakistan has logged over 5.95 lakh cases of coronavirus so far.

India, so far, has supplied vaccines at least 65 countries under three categories – under Covax, in the form of grant (free of cost) and through commercial sales.

As per the records of the Ministry of External Affairs, 579.19 lakh doses have been provided in all. About 163 lakh doses have been supplied under Covax, 77 lakh doses under grant and 338 lakh doses under commercial deals. Bangladesh tops list of countries that have got vaccines with 90 lakh doses.

“It is Indian manufactured vaccine (by The Serum Institute of India) that would be administered to Pakistani nationals under the GAVI alliance that has been aiding developing and lower income nations on the vaccine front,” said Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed when asked about where the vaccine was coming from by the Pakistani Media.
