On Wednesday, the citizens were warned of strict action by the BMC for the usage of banned plastic, even the single-use disposable plastic. The production, transportation, sale, storage, handling as well as the use of prohibited plastic is prohibited, as it is prescribed by the state government, said BMC.

Restricted plastics include:

  •  plastic bags (with and without handles)
  • disposable items like plates, cups, glasses, spoons, etc, made of plastic and disposed of at once
  •  plastic items used for food packaging in hotels
  •  cups/pouches used for storing liquids
  • includes plastic and plastic wrap used for storage and packaging of all types of food, grains, etc.”

The officials have said that the BMC is appealing to people not to use banned plastic or else the citizens will have to face legal action.

If the producers, stockists, suppliers and the sellers are found violating, then they will have to pay Rs,5000 for the first offense, Rs.10,000 for second offense and a fine of Rs.25,000 and/or imprisonment for a period of 3 months for an offense after that, said the BMC.
