49 year old Jamil Shaikh was attacked by two unidentified bike borne assailants in Thane’s Rabodi area on Monday afternoon. The body has been taken to JJ Hospital for postmortem. Shaikh’s family and MNS leaders have claimed that he was killed because of his stance against a cluster development project.

The police have begun investigating the case and are trying to ascertain who had an axe to grind with them.Police says that the two bike borne assailants shot Shaikh in the head near Bismillah hotel around 2.30 pm in Rabodi and they fled away.

Shaikh is an MNS local ward unit chief from Uthalsar in Thane. “He was against cluster development. He was creating awareness about the ill-effects among locals,” said MNS leader Javed Shaikh.”Jamil was attacked with a chopper in 2015, but he had managed to survive and even demanded police protection. However, the Thane police did not consider his application,” added Javed.

Jamil is survived by his wife and his two daughters, aged 6 and 3. “We are not going to collect his body until the police arrest the accused. The cops have not arrested those responsible for the previous attack on Jamil too,” said MNS leader Avinash Jadhav. On October 30, MNS leader Rakesh Patil was killed in Ambernath. Patil’s family had alleged that he was killed by a contract killer paid by a builder.

A CCTV footage of the surrounding area is being searched.According to police sources, there was a dispute about the development of a project in this area. The police is also investigating that angle.

“The incident has been captured in the CCTV which clearly shows that Shaikh riding on his bike was being chased by two people on a bike. After coming close to Shaikh’s vehicle, the pillion rider removed his gun and shot the deceased,” said police official, from Thane.”Following the incident, Shaikh immediately fell off his bike (unconscious) in a pool of blood. The passer-by alerted the police while the accused fled away from the spot,” added the official.

“A case has been filed against the unknown accused at Rabodi police station under section 302 of Indian Penal Code. So far no one has been arrested in this case and investigation in this matter is underway,” said R Shirtode, senior police inspector, Rabodi police station, Thane.
