Maharashtra forest department has included over 961 hectares of mangroves which will be protected as reserved forests under Section 4 of the Indian Forest Act, 1927. Earlier, State Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray had tweeted that 1,433 ha mangroves were declared as reserved forest under Section 20 of the Act.
Keeping this in mind, in Aditya Thackeray’s latest tweet on Friday, he said that the total mangrove area which is under protection in Ratnagiri is currently more than 2,394 ha.
NatConnect Foundation’s Director BN Kumar said that thousands of hectares of mangroves in Navi Mumbai are yet to be taken over by the government in order to conserve them, as per the orders of the Bombay High Court issued in the month of September 2018.
