Barcelona confirmed to The Associated Press that Messi sent the club a document expressing his desire to leave. However, the club stated that this might result in a legal battle. Barcelona said it told Messi in response that it wants him to stay and finish his career at the club.
An emergency meeting is now being conducted by Barca chiefs with club officials regarding the termination clauses in Messi’s contract which is believed to have expired.
Messi had to inform Barcelona of his decision to terminate his contract before the end of May, but Messi’s camp felt the deadline should be the end of August due to the disruption caused in the entire football season as many games were suspended or endings were delayed.
His decision to quit Barcelona comes after Barca’s Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Former England and Barcelona striker Gary Lineker said on twitter :
Since the announcement, Barca fans have gathered outside the Camp Nou to show their support for Leo Messi.
