On Tuesday, a notification was issued by the law ministry which said that the President Ram Nath Kovind had formally appointed Justice Ramana as Chief Justice of India beginning from April 24. Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana will be the next Chief Justice of India and he will be taking over CJI SA Bobde who will demit his office on April 23.
Newly appointed CJI Ramana is the first generation lawyer who belongs from an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh. A PIB release has said that Ramana was an avid reader,literature enthusiast and a man passionate about Carnatic music.
Last month, CJI Bobde had recommended Justice Ramana as his successor. CJI Bobde is is due to retire on April 23.
Ramana will be the second Chief Justice of India from Andhra Pradesh; Justice K Subba Rao was the ninth Chief Justice of India from 1966-67.Justice Ramana will be the country’s top judge for a year and four months, till August 26, 2022.
In his nearly four-decade-long career, Justice Ramana “has practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals and the Supreme Court of India in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, service and election matters. He has specialised in constitutional, criminal, service and inter-state river laws,” as per his profile on the official website of the Supreme Court.
He was “appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. He functioned as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013 to May 20, 2013,” it further reads.
Justice Bobde has been a part of several key cases including the historic Ayodhya verdict. He was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India in November 2019,succeeding Justice (retired) Ranjan Gogoi.
