The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced Coding and Data Science as new subjects in collaboration with Microsoft. Coding is introduced to students in class 6-8 whereas Data Science is introduced for class 8-12 as new skill subjects for 2021-22 academic session.

“The idea is to simplify the coding learning experience by nurturing design thinking, logical flow of ideas and applying this across the disciplines. The foundations laid in the early years will help the students to build the competencies in the area of AI, data sciences, and other disciplines,” the central education board said in a statement.

Curriculum of Coding and Data Science is focused on building critical thinking, computational skills, problem-solving skills, creativity and hands-on exposure to new technologies. These subjects have been launched in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Chairman of CBSE, Manoj Ahuja has said that, “As we transition to a world that relies increasingly on technology, it is critical that we impart skills that prepare students and educators across the country to succeed in this digital world. The new course curriculum on coding and data science will equip students with future-ready learning skills. This is an important step to enable self-reliance in our students and equip them with skills like problem-solving, logical thinking, collaboration and design thinking that are critical for success.”

Aligning with NCERT patterns and structures, Microsoft has designed supplementary handbooks for both Coding as well as Data Science. These books cover real-life examples which are aimed at exposure building to ethical dimensions exposure to Microsoft MakeCode, which is an open source platform that will enable students to learn better in the best manner across all disciplines which include mathematics, languages, and social sciences while it builds the foundation for AI-based applications of data science.

Navtez Bal who is the Executive Director, Public Sector of Microsoft India has said that, “Skills like coding and data science are the currency of the future. Including these skills in school, the curriculum will play a strong role in preparing India’s future workforce for the new world of work.”
