An ICMR study in Chennai has found that the Delta variant of coronavirus has the potential to infect vaccinated as well as non vaccinated individuals.

The study findings indicate that the generality of the Delta variant was not different between the vaccinated and non vaccinated people. The high transmissible Delta variant is the dominant strain circulating across the world and is one of the primary drivers for second wave in India.

Jeromie Thangaraj, a scientist at National Institute of Epidemiology who was involved in studies said, since the sample size was low, they did not include re – infections as it was very few and no further classified whether those who were infected post- vaccination had Covishield or Covaxin.

After completing the study, the data was shared with Tamil Nadu’s health department. The report suggested that non- pharmaceutical intervention must continue to slow down the transmission combined with speedy vaccination coverage.
