In a report, Niti Aayog has said that the incidents of obesity as well as of overweight are increasing among the children, women, and adolescents in India.
In order to tackle the rise in obesity problems in the country, the Centre is planning to impose tax on foods with high sugar content, fat, and salt. The evidence is being reviewed by Niti Aayog to understand that actions to be taken by India to tackle this situation.
As per the National Family Health Survey 2019-20, there has been an increase in the percentage of obese women from 20.6% in 2015-16 to 24%. On the other hand, the percentage of men has risen to 22.9%.
The report said, “Niti Aayog, in collaboration with IEG and PHFI, is reviewing the evidence to understand the actions India can take, such as front-of-pack labelling, marketing and advertising of HFSS foods, and taxation of foods high in fats, sugar, and salt.”
