Draupadi Murmu was born on June 20, 1958, in Odisha in the Santali tribal to Biranchi Narayan Tudu. In the year 1997, she became a part of the BJP and she was elected as the councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. In 2000, she became the chairperson of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. Additionally, she also served as the National Vice President of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha. 

Draupadi Murmu is the first tribal President of India. On May 18, 2015, Draupadi Murmu was appointed as the first woman governor of Jharkhand and she held the post of the governor for more than 6 years. She was also the first female tribal leader from Odisha who served as the Governor of Odisha.

During the rule of BJP-BJD, Murmu was a minister in the Odisha government between the years March 2000 and May 2004. She served as the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation from March 6, 2000, till August 6, 2000. She was also the Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resource Development from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004. 

Draupadi Murmu is a Santhal tribal by birth. From 2000 and 2004, she was elected as an MLA from the Assembly of Odisha’s Rairangpur. In 2007, the Odisha Legislative Assembly awarded her the Nilkantha Award for Best MLA.

Draupadi Mumu’s rival Yashwant Sinha congratulated her and gave her his best wishes on social media. He tweeted “I heartily congratulate Draupadi Murmu on her victory in Presidential Election 2022. I hope – indeed, every Indian hopes – that as 15th President she functions as Custodian of Constitution without fear or favour. I join fellow countrymen in extending best wishes to her.”
