On Thursday Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Chahal said that the decision
about permitting the general public to travel by suburban local trains in Mumbai will be taken after Christmas and New Year celebrations are over.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Chahal said that even though the number of new coronavirus patients in the city is decreasing day by day, the number of asymptomatic new patients is presently high.
Currently, only certain categories of persons, including those working for essential services, are allowed to travel by local trains.
As of now, the railway authorities have permitted women to travel by train on both Central Railway and Western Railway routes during certain time slots during the day.
On Wednesday, Railway Passengers’ Associations have demanded that the government should now allow everyone to commute without using the reason of ‘crowding’.
Last month, amid increasing apprehensions of a second wave of coronavirus outbreak in Maharashtra, the BMC chief had informed that the civic body is mulling over resuming local trains for all after December 15.
