Every year, lakhs of people gather at Chaityabhoomi to pay tribute to Dr Ambedkar’s death anniversary. But, owing to the coronavirus pandemic and the possibility of a second wave, the BMC has decided not to make any arrangements at Shivaji Park this year for Ambedkar followers.

Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday appealed to people of the state to pay their tributes to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on his death anniversary on December 6 from home and not crowd at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar.

Thackeray said that there will be a live broadcast from Chaityabhoomi so that followers of Ambedkar can pay homage from home.
The CM also said that like every year, flowers will be showered by helicopter at Chaityabhoomi on Mahaparinirvan Din, and the main anniversary event, which will be carried out by a handful of officials, will be broadcast live on different media platforms.
To drive home his point, Thackeray said the Pandharpur wari (pilgrimage) and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray’s death anniversary too were low-key affairs this year due to the pandemic.
