For the readers on the go:
A smart city in China’s Xiong’an region is being built to set “a new standard in the post-COVID era.” Planned by Spanish architects Guallart, the “self-sufficient” city will provide living spaces for future lockdowns. The buildings will have “internal metabolic systems” that integrate food production, energy, and recycled water. It will also contain vegetable gardens, solar panels, markets, and communal workspaces to ensure a “full-life” even in times of confinement.
Dive Deep:
The community in Xiong’an will feature apartments with balconies, a terrace for drone deliveries, co-working spaces, a vegetable garden, and a food market.
The press release stated,
“Our proposal stems from the need to provide solutions to the various crises that are taking place in our planet at the same time, in order to create a new urban life-based in the circular bioeconomy that will empower cities and communities. The idea is to provide a full life in the times of confinement.”
