On Thursday, the DMK has nominated a 28-year-old Priya as the mayor candidate for the Chennai Corporation. R. Priya is the first Dalit and the youngest woman to be on the Mayor’s post in Chennai. After Tara Cherian and Kamakshi Jayaraman, R. Priya is the third woman to get on this post in the history of Chennai.
From Thiru Vi Ka Nagar in North Chennai, R. Priya won the TN urban local body elections from the 74th ward. R. Priya is the granddaughter of the former DMK MLA Chengai Sivam and she comes from a family having a strong political background.
Today, on March 4, the indirect elections for the post of mayor as well as the chairpersons for the Greater Chennai Corporation will be held.
