On Tuesday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a PIL challenging the release of convicts of the Bilkis Bano case. A Public Interest Litigation was being heard by the court and was filed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Politburo member Subhashini Ali, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and one other petitioner.

A note of submissions provided by Senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Singhvi, and lawyer Aparna Bhat was taken by Chief Justice NV Ramana. Mr. Sibal said “We are only challenging the remission and not the Supreme Court order. The Supreme Court order is fine, my Lords. We are challenging the principles on the basis of which remission was granted,” as quoted by NDTV.

The eleven convicts are Jaswantbhai Nai, Govindbhai Nai, Shailesh Bhatt, Radhesham Shah, Bipin Chandra Joshi, Kesarbhai Vohania, Pradeep Mordhiya, Bakabai Vohaniya, Rajubhai Soni, Mitesh Bhatt, and Ramesh Chandana.
