Accused in Dabholkar’s murder case, granted Bail by Bombay HC

On Thursday, the High Court of Bombay was listening to the Narendra Dabholkar murder case. Vikram Bhave, the man who was accused of Narendra Dabholkar’s murder has been granted bail. 

The murder case took place 8 years back in 2013 and the murdered has still not been found. Bhave (37), currently lodged at the Yerwada Central Jail in Pune, will be released after submitting a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and guarantor.

Central Bureau of Investigation’s plea of holding the bail order was refused by the Bombay HC. Though a Bail has been granted, the Bombay HC said that Bhave cannot leave the jurisdiction of the trial court. Also, Bhave will have to keep visiting the police station when needed and has to attend all the proceedings during trial.

The division bench consisting of justice Sambhaji Shinde and justice Manish Pitale court while granting him bail said, “We have proceeded on the basis of the material on which respondent No 2 [CBI] has placed emphasis and we find that the same does not appear to show reasonable grounds to conclude that the accusations levelled against the appellant [Bhave] can be said to be prima facie true.”

When rationalist Narendra Dabholkar was on a morning walk on August 20, 2013 on V R Shinde bridge near Omkareshwar temple in Pune, as per CBI, Sachin Andure and Sharad Kalaskar – arrested in the case – had allegedly opened fire at him.

At first, an offence was registered by the Deccan police station about the murder, and then on May 9, 2014, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further investigation.

CBI, in accordance to the case says that the main accused in the case is Virendrasingh Tavade of Sanatan Sanstha and the other two, Sharad Kalaskar and Sachin Andure are the attackers who shot Dr Dabholkar.

When taken in custody, Kalaskar told CBI that it was Bhave who helped him and Andure was the one who surveyed the area where Dr. Dabholkar was fatally attacked.

Bhave also helped the duplicate escape the place after the attack, as per Kalaskar. Bhave was subsequently arrested on September 25, 2019 and then, a Bail after 1 year, 7 months and 11 days, on 6th May, 2021, Bhave has been granted bail.
