21-year-old Arya Rajendran, who successfully contested the recent civic polls, is likely to become the next Mayor of Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram.
Rajendran won the elections from Mudavanmugal ward by bagging 2,872 votes, 549 more than the rival Congress candidate. She is a second-year degree student of All Saint’s College in the city. The city’s district secretariat of the Marxist party recommended her name for the post during a meeting. If approved, she will become the youngest Mayor ever in the country.

Kerala local body polls. The ruling Left-led coalition in Kerala scooped up a big win in recently concluded local body polls seen by all parties as a litmus test ahead of assembly elections in the state next year.
“Thank you Kerala. Thank you for reposing faith in LDF. We are humbled by the trust and the confidence of the people of Kerala. This is a victory for secularism and inclusive development. My warm greetings to all the elected representatives,” had said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a tweet.
The LDF has won 514 of the 941 gram panchayats, 10 of the 14 district panchayats and 108 of the 152 block panchayats. The UDF, on the other hand, finished first in 375 gram panchayats, 44 block panchayats and four district panchayats. The NDA, led by the BJP, won 23 gram panchayats.
Reacting to the won, BJP MP KJ Alphons took a dig at the UDF and said the Congress-led opposition alliance had collapsed in most parts of the state. Alphons said the Congress neither has leadership no ideology.
