September 1 marks the start of the PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) awareness month.
Aim of the designated month
To raise awareness and help improve the lives of PCOS sufferers by curbing symptoms and changing the lifestyle leading to PCOS.
What is PCOS?
“PCOS is a serious genetic, hormone, metabolic and reproductive disorder that affects women and girls,” according to the PCOS Challenge Association.
PCOS occurs due to an amalgamation of genetic and environmental factors.
Explaining the Issue
In a healthy women, one egg is released from the ovary at around the 15th day of the period.
With women affected by PCOS the egg gets trapped inside the ovary and a fluid forms a bubble-like structure called a cyst around it.
Over the course of time, many such cysts are formed which result in PCOS
The Symptoms of PCOS are Irregular Menstruation or either absence or heavy menstruation. Obesity – Weight gain, acne, inappropriate male features, loss of scalp hair and growth of unwanted hair with dark patches on the skin are the obvious physical symptoms seen.
Infertility is one of the major problems that may occur in women which doesn’t let her be a mother eventually, leading to depression.
Unfortunately, in the past 7-8 years, the cases have escalated and every 3 out of 10 women visiting the gynecologist face PCOS.
What Possible Causes of PCOS?
– Family tendencies – if in a family, a mother or a sister faces PCOS, there are chances of one going through it too, because, Genes.
– High Stress Levels that are very common these years
– Lack of regular sleep and Minimal Exercise leading to a weak physique leads to creation of less antibodies
– Extreme prenatal exposure to androgen/testosterone (The Male Hormones) and an excessive insulin production can be the cause too.
How can you prevent PCOS?
Prevention of PCOS may seem easy but, when one actually starts following what is said, it turns out to be a little difficult routine in this century. An hour of daily exercise is mandatory followed by a not-so strict diet that avoids Sugars and Carbs.
We all have known that The Early Bird Catches The Worm, and that’s exactly one of the preventives. But, in order to wake up early, going to bed early, atleast 8 Hours before the rise is a must.
And, most importantly, A Healthy Mind with Healthy Thoughts is needed.
Once an individual masters these, not only PCOS, but one can automatically avoid a lot of health issues.
