India surpasses US in Covid-19 vaccine inoculation, administers over 323.6 million jabs

According to the Union Health Ministry, India, on Sunday, has moved ahead of the US in terms of total number of vaccination done against the deadly Covid-19 as its cumulative inoculation coverage has crossed 323.6 million on Monday. So far, India has administered a total of 32,36,63,297 vaccine doses, as per the provisional report on Monday. Out of this, 17,21,268 doses were administered in the last 24 hours.

The Ministry said, “India achieves another milestone in COVID-19 vaccination and overtakes USA in total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered.”

As per the data, so far 1,01,98,257 healthcare workers have taken the first jab while 72,07,617 have taken the second jab.

On the other hand, the US has administered 32,33,27,328 vaccine doses since December 8. According to the news agency ANI, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Francehave administered 7,67,74,990, 7,14,37,514, 4,96,50,721 and 5,24,57,288 doses respectively.

It was on January 16, 2021 when India began its vaccination drive, whereas the US launched its drive on December 14, 2020. On June 21, India’s vaccination drive which is still gaining momentum entered a new phase.

“India’s vaccination drive keeps gaining momentum! Congrats to all those who are driving this effort. Our commitment remains vaccines for all, free for all,” PM Modi said.

Being a part of the new phase, all the vaccination doses started to be allocated to the states and the Union Territories on the basis of their population, vaccination progress and infection burden.

Adding to this, the Centre has decided to buy 75% of the vaccines from the vaccine manufacturers for free supply to the states. Whereas private sector hospitals have continued to procure the remaining 25%. It was announced that private hospitals could not charge more than Rs.150 over the pre-fixed price of every dose.
