Maharashtra was just coming out of the trauma of the second wave of Coronavirus which led to the highest number of covid emergencies in the state and now, the third wave is ready to hit the shores. In the first wave, the number of Covid-19 patients was highest at 3,01,752 on September 13, 2020, and in the second wave, the highest was on April 22, when the number reached 6,99,858.

Now, in a meeting with CM Uddhav Thackeray, the Covid-19 task force said that the Third Wave will hit the state in the coming 2-4 weeks. 

The new variant of Delta Covid-19 virus, which is being termed as Delta Plus, is not yet a variant of concern in India, but experts in Maharashtra have warned that this variant may be the reason behind a third wave of the pandemic, which could take active Covid-19 patients up to eight lakh and 10 per cent of them could be children.

CMO Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray was presented a presentation by the Covid-19 task force of Maharashtra, the state which has been the most affected state of all time in the Covid reign in India.

It was this meet when the task force expressed their concern. The data said that the number of cases in the third wave will be a lot more and can be twice that in the second one. 

“The Delta plus variant could stoke the third wave in Maharashtra. It could spread at double the rate,” said an official during the presentation.

The meeting was held to review the readiness of the predicted third wave. The meeting consisted of the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope as well as the senior bureaucrats.

Epidemiologists are expecting up to 100 days between the peaks of the two waves or eight weeks from the decline of one wave to the next peak. Maharashtra has vaccinated 2,64,79,757 people and as per the government data, ranks first in list of states with the highest immunization. 28,01,117 individuals in the age group of 18-44 years have taken the jab already.
