On Tuesday, November 24, the Indian Government banned 43 more Mobile Apps from being accessed by Indian users. The move has been taken under section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
What is Section 69A?
- Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, was introduced by an amendment to the Act in 2008.
- It gives the Central government the power to block public access to any information online — whether on websites or mobile apps.
- Apart from this, a court may also issue directions for blocking information online.
A statement by the Centre said,
“This action was taken based on the inputs regarding these apps for engaging in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued the order to bar the access of these apps based on the wide-ranging reports that the ministry received from the Indian Cyber Crime Co-ordination Center, Ministry of Home Affairs, it further stated.
