The absence of bottled drinking water, Rail Neer, for four days at some railway stalls on Central Railway’s suburban section has left commuters high and dry, especially in the humid weather.<\/p>\n
“Every day, at least 200 commuters complain that we are not selling packaged drinking water, and they have to opt for soft drinks, buttermilk or cold milk,”‘ said a stall vendor at Byculla station.<\/p>\n
TOI saw at least five passengers being turned away as there was no packaged drinking water. “This is uncalled for. The railways should ensure there is drinking water available at the stalls. This is the Diwali weekend and many families travel by trains,” said Vikas Kumar, who was travelling with his family from Byculla to Kalyan.<\/p>\n
Another commuter said, “I faced a similar problem at Dadar and Dombivli stations a few days back. There was not a single bottle of packaged water at the authorised stall when I desperately wanted one.”<\/p>\n
A senior IRCTC official said there was a shortage in supply of Rail Neer bottles for a few days. “There was no production for two days due to fumigation and for sanitation purposes. This affected supply to railway stalls,” the official stated.<\/p>\n
Another senior railway official told TOI, “The shortage started on November 12, and officials from the packaging plant have written to us that it could continue till November 19.”<\/p>\n
CR chief commercial manager R D Sharma said, “We do not want to inconvenience commuters. As the shortage will continue for a few more days, we are informing railway stalls that till supply is restored, they can stock packaged drinking water of five other shortlisted brands.” At present, the stalls cannot stock other brands. “If caught, we can be fined up to Rs 25,000,” a stall owner said. “We are therefore not stocking other brands.
