Thane: At the World Wildlife<\/a> Day event, that focused on anti-poaching and organised by the Thane, Mumbai and Palghar forest<\/a> departments, many youth pledged to do their bit to conserve the fauna.<\/p>\n

The event held at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) titled ‘say no to illegal trade of wildlife’ in collaboration with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, informed dozens of school and college students about the rich biodiversity in this region. The students were shown hides of snakes, monitor lizards, tigers and leopards as well as ivory tusks of poached elephants and other such artefacts seized by the department.<\/p>\n

With the event making an impact, the youth took a pledge to denounce the use of artefacts made from the hides, teeth and scales of different wildlife species. They also promised not to participate in the illegal trade of exotic pets that belong to the wild.<\/p>\n

Sharvi Shah, a 21-year-old college student, said, “We keep hearing about poaching<\/a> incidents, but never actually realised the intensity. At the event, we saw bags made out of the skin of a reptile and a massive tiger skin. It is so shameful that these beautiful animals are killed just for cheap fashion. Now that I know about the gravity of these activities I will keep a lookout for any such case in my circles and inform the officials.”<\/p>\n

The officials and crowd even conducted a symbolic burning of smaller poaching trophies, including a few snake skins, corals and scales to reflect the insignificance of the reasons that end up in the killing of these animals.<\/p>\n

“The illegal trade of wildlife and the trophies that they provide when killed is only active because of the demand for it in the market. In the recent times we have seen many youth involved in the trade of either these poached trophies or even live exotic animals which are protected by the Wildlife Act. Through this event, we tried to target this young section and informed them of the importance of the balance and co-existence of the fauna here,” said, M Maranko, regional deputy director at the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.<\/p>\n
