Students across the city took to social media to disapprove of the Shiv Sena’s censure of the Hanuman mural at the IIT-Bombay campus.The mural, bearing the deity’s resemblance, had to be pulled down at the Powai campus following the Sena’s objections. The art work, a part of the institute’s ongoing annual cultural fest, Mood Indigo, was deemed “inappropriate” by the Sena, which demanded an apology from the organisers. Students from across the city, including institutes like TISS, and artists blasted the party for its interference.<\/p>\n

“So apparently Hanuman can’t hold a pen, nor wear modern dress,” said a student. “Shame,” said another from TISS. Many took to Twitter and Facebook to vent their anger and anguish.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the painting was erased after local Sena workers marched into the campus and demanded its removal. Among several murals at the institute’s student activity centre, it depicted a flying man in western clothes carrying a mountain in one hand and holding a pen instead of a mace in the other.<\/p>\n

The IITs refused to take a stand. “It is amazing that an autonomous college failed to stand up to artistic freedom,” said an artist. Professors at Mumbai University recalled that when the Sena forced their vice-chancellor to pull out Rohinton Mistry’s Such A Long Journey, he immediately yielded. “We are surprised that a top institute like IIT-B too reacted similarly,” said a faculty member<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
